Congress: Investigate Trump’s Threat to Jail Journalists

Donald Trump just threatened to jail journalists for doing their jobs — and if no one stops him, press freedom itself could collapse.

At a recent press conference, Trump said his administration would force reporters to reveal their sources behind coverage of a missing U.S. airman in Iran — and suggested that if they refuse, they could be jailed. It was a direct warning to every journalist in America: report something the president doesn’t like, and you could be punished.

Congress cannot ignore it. Lawmakers have the authority to investigate threats against press freedom, hold hearings, and pass protections that make it unmistakably clear: No president can weaponize the government against journalists.

The First Amendment protects a free press because democracy depends on it. Journalists must be able to investigate, publish, and protect their sources without fear of retaliation from the government. If that protection disappears, so does the public’s ability to learn the truth about abuses of power.

Trump’s threat crosses a dangerous line. Forcing reporters to reveal sources would destroy investigative journalism as we know it. Whistleblowers would go silent. Corruption would stay hidden. And those in power would operate without accountability.

We’ve seen this pattern before. Trump has repeatedly attacked the press, weakened safeguards for journalists, and labeled critical reporting as the enemy. But this escalation — openly threatening jail time — marks a new and alarming phase.

Congress must act now. Lawmakers should launch immediate investigations, hold public hearings, and advance protections that defend journalists from political retaliation. These steps don’t just respond to one threat — they help prevent the next one.

Tell Congress: "Investigate Donald Trump’s threats to jail journalists, defend the First Amendment, and pass strong protections to ensure no reporter is ever targeted for doing their job."
